The more armature(or biased) the commentator the more likely you going to get to broad assessments of a general's performance based on their 20/20 hindsight and misunderstanding of the real nature of the project (war). I think this can be really true of young gamers whose only exposure to the military, let along real combat, is throwing the dice and making their move based on a book of rules (which do not apply in the real world). Your rant is not entirely unjustified. Every general--even the greatest (Lee sending Pickett against the Union Center comes to mind)--makes mistakes. The honest historian looks at their full career and not one isolated incident (even ones which may have cost them the battle and/or the war) in order to make an honest (there's that word again) assessment of their skill and ability. I would second Gerry D's recommendation on Keegan's book. I do not always agree with Keegan's conclusions or assessments, however, I do feel he is an honest historian who reaches his conclusions after an in-depth study of his subject. I certainly take his opinion into account when drawing my own conclusions.

It would affect the rich republican children that have no qualms pushing for war when they know they wo not be fighting it.
